What is meditation anyway?

You’d think wouldn’t you that after working on this project for more than a year that I’d be able to explain meditation or at least understand it?

Nope.

Until yesterday, when I recorded a skype interview with Matthew Young of the Melbourne Mediation Centre. I simply asked him how he taught it in his classes. His answer, I think explains what meditation is better than any explanation I have yet heard.

If you have a spare 3 minutes – take the time to listen. It makes a lot of sense to me.

  1. Wow, yes this was an awesome explanation and my body returning to a natural state of balance is exactly what I need! I’ve been told by a remedial therapist that my back injury was my body’s way of telling me I was taking on too much both physically & mentally and was a good reminder to just stop and listen. Thank you so much Kathy for pulling together this amazing service & making it so easy to be part of :)

  3. Kathy! Yes! This is exactly what I needed to hear. And this follows along with the people who commented on my post who ‘get’ meditation – they say they can do it anywhere … With or without prompts. One of my friend even told me she has meditated in the middle of IKEA once!

I love Matt’s comparison to the watching of the flames of a fire and the way your brain just unconsciously empties. Perfect!

By the way, I am not sure if this is ‘right’ or not – but I have been practicing meditation just before ‘eyes close’ at night each night. Focussing on letting everything from the day go and finding a little bit of quiet space before bed. It’s been really nice :)
