You know those people who you just can’t help but instantly like?
Matt Young of the Melbourne Meditation Centre is like that. He supported the idea of mydiamonddays – way back when it was just the barest seed of an idea. If you live in or near Melbourne you really need to pay him a visit. Here’s Matt telling the fantastic story of how he first got into meditation (skype quality is a bit dodgy but it’s worth it!)
If you can’t watch the video, Matt was kicked out of the UK after living there for 4 years (his visa ran out rather than anything more dramatic I think). He ended up in India as it was on his way home and figured when in India – do yoga.
He spent about 5 hours a day on it for 3 months. At the end of each session the yoga teacher would leave the room and tell the class to “sit quietly”. Matt noticed (despite leaping monkeys and fighting neighbours) that there were some pretty dramatic results from this and set his sights on learning more. (Trust me, the story is even better with a Matt’s pretty excellent Indian accent).
Matt has courses that he operates out of his Melbourne studio as well as some online courses and is generously sharing some with us at mydiamonddays. He is also offering a meditation in the gardens course which sounds like heaven to me
Here’s a link to Matt’s page on mydiamonddays where he talks some more about common misconceptions people often have about meditation. The good news is that it’s not as hard as it sounds.
